Sambhrahma Farms Masterplan

The vision for the project was to bring permaculture, whole systems design and sustainable farm & resource management practices to a 120-acre parcel of land in Denkanikottai. The plan was to create a sustainable space to slow down and notice the striking beauty of working natural systems, all the while providing an inspiring and stress-free lifestyle - an escape from the mega city of Bangalore. To achieve the same, three different models of (managed) plotted farms were designed (food forest, agroforestry and timber model) as mini farms for urbanites, to bring them in close proximity to nature while being sustainable and environmentally responsible.

To bring the vision to life the team focused on appropriate earthworks, water conservation and management, regeneration of soil and planting of trees which will eventually change the microclimate, bring back the biodiversity of the disturbed parcel of land. The land was zoned and designed in such a way that the landscape is verdant with self-enriching ecosystems and provides nutritious food while acting as a carbon sink for the area. The design expands the green coverage of the site turning it into a more productive and functional space.

The land context provided a deeper understanding of the need for riparian zones that would act as undisturbed wild zones, which would inevitably assist in the reduction of soil erosion, soil loss, attract biodiversity and protect the streams on site. Care was also taken to design overflows for all waterbodies to avoid the chances of flooding.
